Buffalo City Municipality is offering a reward of R20 000 to anyone with information that would lead to the arrest of those who stole a speed camera on the North East Expressway.

Municpality spokesperson, Samnkelo Ngwenya, says the Metro has been plagued by cases of theft and vandalism of equipment and cables which affects service delivery and costs the City millions.

“Our permanent speed camera was damaged and stolen on the North East Express Way in East London. The incident took place on Wednesday and we would like to use the opportunity to inform the public of a R20 000 reward for a positive arrest,” he said.

Ngwenya said the camera was installed to prevent speed-related accidents, adding that in the past six months the average speed came down from well over 90kph to below the speed limit of 60kph.

He said Buffalo City was also experiencing cable theft which is affecting their traffic operations.

“Currently, the telephones are completely dead at Braelyn Traffic Department due to another cable theft which took place last night after the cable was repaired from the first incident,” he said on Friday.
