Buffalo City Municipality says it has procured new tractors, sweeping machines and compactor trucks as part of its strategy to keep the city clean.
Municipality spokesperson, Thandy Matebese, says the new equipment will assist with current backlogs in refuse collection as well as increasing the current fleet.
"Well, as part of Buffalo City's turn-around strategy in terms of keeping the city clean, we have procured 20 tractors, six street sweeping machines and eight compactor trucks. Obviously that is aimed at keeping the city clean and green as well.," he said.
"Recently we won an award for being the third cleanest municipality in the country," he added.
Meanwhile, DA caucus spokesperson, Lance Weyer, says Buffalo City is drowning in uncollected refuse.
He says there are only five trucks on the road while 21 are in for repairs.
"This figure can only be attributed to a lack of proper management of maintenance, an issue we have also seen in the BCMM Fire Department where a large percentage of the fleet is often out of commission," he said.
