Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality is vying to host a major Brics event when South Africa hosts the next Brics summit in June.
Buffalo City will have a stakeholder engagement on Wednesday at East London Golf Club as part of its planning.
Municipality spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said that they want to put plans in place to host either or both the Brics Friendship Cities and Local Government Cooperation Forum in June, as well as a Meeting of Ministers.
He said these events would have tremendous economic spin-offs for Buffalo City.
"South Africa is part of the Brics countries and this year the President is chairing Brics and we'll be having summits and a number of events taking place in South Africa," he said.
"So, we put in a bid to say that as part of bringing events and economic (development) to the city we would want to host one of those engagements and this (stakeholder engagement) is part of that process," he said.
Ngwenya said the Wednesday engagement will bring together "key stakeholders" in Buffalo City because "we need businesses to be on board".
"We need everyone to be on board so that when we actually get the bid, we'll be able to have a concentrated approach," he said.
