Buffalo City Metro has confirmed that workers who were on a strike demaning a 14th cheque, returned to work on Friday.
Spokesperson, Keith Ngesi, says this followed a meeting today between the municipality and the SA Municipal Workers Union in the local labour forum.
He says various departments are working on "catch-up" plans and they're hoping that by next week "things will be back to normal".
Meanwhile, the SA Municipal Workers Union says they agreed in the Forum on a once-off payment to compensate workers.
Samwu provincial secretary, Siphiwo Ndunyana, says they also agreed with the metro that a new process of job evaluation should be done to ensure that workers are paid at a level of all metro grade municipalities.
"We are closing that old chapter. We must give workers a once off settlement which is going to at least cover some middle ground for both employer and worker. If the appeal were to be considered which was made in 2006/2009 going forward- the money the muncipality would of used to reimburse those workers, for a once off settlement would of been much higher." says Ndunyana
The workers' wild-cat strike has left East London, Bhisho and King Williams Town littered with garbage for the past 13 days.
