Undertaken by the Buffalo City Metro Development Agency (BCMDA), East London’s WaterWorld Fun Park forms part of the city's plan to consolidate and diversify the Metro.
A spokesperson for the BCMDA Oyama Makalima says the agency was set up six years ago to revitalize and fast-track the city’s tourism offerings.
The Park will be stationed along East London Fullers and Leaches Bay to consolidate the Metro’s coastal tourism offerings while diversifying entertainment spaces along the coastline to reduce congestion along the Esplanade beachfront, further attracting investors into the city.
Seated in West Bank opposite the East London Race Track, the interactive recreational fun park is part of a broader plan to develop the West Bank into a “tourism attraction integrated area.”
Makalima states that the City has invested R115 million to ensure children and adults are all accommodated.
The WaterWorld offers both free and paid-for activities, such as pools, jungle gyms and an outdoor gym.
Makalima says adrenaline junkies can look forward to a scooter and running circuit, a skate park and a climbing wall for their exploration.
The Fun Park will also boast the biggest marque in the province, which will host events all year long, further reinforcing the Metro's strategy of being the “Capital of Fun.”
This project, which commenced in 2020, has contributed to the economy with 150 jobs created during construction, and 20 permanent positions for the day-to-day running of the park.
“We still have some significant work around the sewerage system of the facility, however, people can look forward to BCM’s WaterWorld officially opening in July 2023!”
“Our work as BCMDA is only beginning. Duncan Village, Mdantsane and Bhisho already have projects started with the intention of diversifying the city's tourism attractions,” the spokesperson concluded.
