The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya, has welcomed the denial of bail by the Mthatha Magistrate's Court to three men facing charges of fraud and theft involving more than R40 million.
49-year-old Sicelo Nkqayi, 39-year-old Zamikhaya Songca and 44-year-old Bongani Cikolo were arrested by the Gqeberha-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit of the Hawks on the 10th of October and were denied bail on Monday.
They are the suspected ring leaders of the Public Assets Community based Tenants and Owners’ Association in Mthatha which is alleged to have illegally invaded a number of properties that belong to the Eastern Cape Development Cooperation.
It is further alleged that between August 2017 and September 2022, the Association claimed monthly rentals from tenants for their personal use.
Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says investigations revealed that the ECDC was prejudiced cash to the value of more than R40 million.
