Buffalo City Metro out in force over Easter weekend

Buffalo City Municipality said its officials would be hard at work this Easter weekend to ensure that residents and visitors enjoy a safe and incident-free holiday long weekend.

Municipality spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said in a statement on Saturday that a road safety operation was launched on Wednesday with a roadblock together with SAPS on the R72 near Cove Rock “and these will continue throughout the weekend”.

“The roadblocks will look into vehicle roadworthiness, driver fitness and raise awareness to motorists as they travel in and around of the City,” Ngwenya said.

“Also in action will be the City’s Automated Number-plate Recognition (ANPR) bus – which has assisted in the collection of outstanding fines; execution of outstanding warrants of arrest and the finalisation of traffic ticket cases. “

Ngwenya said since the introduction of the ANPR bus in November 2017, the payment rate of outstanding traffic fines has increased significantly as motorists can swipe and pay on the spot.

“Our Traffic and Law Enforcement together with SAPS will be patrolling key strategic areas whilst our big brother CCTV cameras, which are in various areas across the City including Mdantsane - bring extra eyes for the security of our citizens and their assets,” he added.

Ngwenya said their CCTV cameras network along the popular Eastern beach, which were installed at a cost of R1.8m with an upgraded control room, will also be utilized to monitor bathers in the sea.

“Our Disaster and Fire services Departments are also on standby throughout the Easter weekend for any eventualities.  On an annual basis preparations are put in place prior to the Easter Weekend to prepare and manage the influx of public to the various beaches and amenities,” he said.
