Buffalo City Metro Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha says demands of the 14th cheque made by Samwu members are out of the municipality's hands.
Ncitha says Samwu members should take their demands to the SA Local Government Association.
She says the Metro does not discuss wage issues as they are represented by SALGA
"This matter is not in our hands, so if they want to demand anything they should be going to SALGA. They have offices in the province and on a national level. I fail to understand why they are demanding a wage matter from the municipality. As a way forward we have agreed that we will be having a meeting with them" she said
Meanwhile, East London police are maintaining a strong police presence outside City Hall, where a meeting between Buffalo City metro and Samwu members is expected to take place later this morning..
Police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Marais says a group of about 300 protesters has gathered but that the situation is under control
"We have deployed the police helicopter, public order police and other units from SAPS as well as the Buffalo City traffic department. We are monitoring the situation" he said
