Buffalo City mayor outlines budget priorities

Buffalo City Metro Mayor Zukiswa Ncitha has listed the upgrading of roads in the Metro as well as acquiring land for housing as some of the key development projects being targeted by the 2013/2014 budget.

Ncitha hosted a business breakfast in East London on Thursday to present the draft budget to the business community following roadshows held throughout the metro.

She said R102m of the R5.6b budget will go towards roads infrastructure, while R62m will go towards housing.

"The better part of the budget will be utilised on those 3 not that we wont be doing other projects that were in our last financial year. The land acquisition we have interaction with our department of Land Affairs because we have discovered the better part of the land in Buffalo City belong to the Department of Land Affairs and to our parastatals" she said.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Border Kei Chamber of Business, Les Holbrook, has raised concern over the 15.35% and 10% percent hikes in water and electricity tariffs.

" We are obviously concerned about the constant escalation of tariffs. We have not seen a inflation based tariff for the last 15 years even longer. We remind the municipality that they cant use the same argument all the time where they said that the tariffs have to be escalated above normal inflation to deal with growth and development, well they have been doing that for the past 5 years and we have not seen it happen" Holbrook said.
