The Democratic Alliance in Buffalo City says its happy that the proposed merger of the Buffalo City Municipality and the Great Kei local municipality will no longer happen.
The merger, which was proposed by the Municipal Demarcation Board towards the end of last year, would have made it the biggest municipality in South Africa.
The DA Caucus Chairperson in BCM Jan Smit says it is a legal requirement that all municipal and ward boundaries be looked at every 5 years.
He says the DA has been against the merger from the start and lodged objections against it.
"It's just not possible to render services in such a big area. The fact that Great Kei Local municipality finances are not good, administration is not good, it would of put very huge extra burden on Buffalo City Municipality to manage that area, largely also a rural area which is difficult to render services to." says Smit.
