File photo (BCMM)

The Buffalo City Metro (BCMM) says scrap metal dealers are the real criminal masterminds as they allow thieves to sell cable and copper.

The Metro says they are concerned about disturbing acts of theft and vandalism characterised at the East London beachfront.

BCMM says it will all their buildings will be monitored by CCTV and scrap metal dealers will be raided.

According to the CCTV Master plan, all buildings and BCMM premises and Infrastructure will be monitored by CCTV, and this process is underway.

The Metro also supports the draft policy proposal Gazetted by the Department of Trade and Industry where the government wants to impose a six-month ban on the exports of scrap metal.

The draft bill is still open for public comment.

The government has also announced that it is working on a new law that will see convicted scrap metal dealers jailed for longer.
