Major relief predicted at the pumps in September

Significant decreases to fuel prices across the board can be expected in South Africa in September based on current unaudited mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund.

The AA says the decreases to fuel prices in August were offset somewhat by the 75c/l for petrol and diesel which were returned to the General Fuel Levy.

However, the decreases expected in September don't have to factor in any returns to the fuel levy.

According to the data, 95 unleaded petrol is expected to drop by around R2.60 per litre.

The wholesale price of diesel is expected to decrease by around R2.30 a litre and the price of illuminating paraffin by almost R2 a litre.

The main drivers behind the expected decreases are a strengthening Rand and lower international oil prices.

In late trade on Monday, Brent Crude Oil was down nearly five percent at $93.29 a barrel on data showing China's economic recovery stuttering under Covid-19 restrictions and a slumping property sector.
