The Knysna Municipality has appealed to residents and holidaymakers in Buffalo Bay and surrounds to urgently conserve water.
This, after the municipality shutdown the local treatment plant due to the high salt content of the raw water.
Municipal Manager Lauren Waring says the water in the local reservoir is running very low and the municipality began carting in water from Sedgefield to fill the reservoir.
However, she says the water from the Goukamma River becomes very salty from time to time as high seas wash up into the river.
Waring says as soon as the saline content of the water drops sufficiently, the treatment plant will be re-activated.
