Brothers die in Gelvandale shack fire

Three young brothers have burnt to death in a shack fire in Barcelona in Gelvandale.

Port Elizabeth police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans, says the children were sleeping when their mother left the home at about half past seven this morning to go to a shop.
She locked the door behind her and it is believed that a stove was left burning, which may have caused the fire.

Labans has identified the deceased as four-year-old twins, Ruan and Ridwaan Gallant, and six-year-old Michaelangelo Phyllis.

Meanwhile, about 320 people have been displaced after 80 shacks were destroyed in separate fires in Cape Town.

Theo Lane of the city's fire and rescue services says the first fire started in Section 6 of the California informal settlement on Monday night.
About 60 shacks burnt down and 200 people were displaced.

Lane says the second fire started just after midnight in the 8th Avenue informal settlement.

About 20 shacks were burnt down and 120 people were left displaced.

Miraculously, no-one was injured in either incident.
