British tourists drown at Plettenberg Bay

Two British nationals in their 20s  have drowned off a beach at Plettenberg Bay.

The NSRI's Craig LAMBINON says a Plettenberg Bay duty crew was activated just after 6 o'clock last evening following a request for assistance from a member of the public,
a local man, on Robberg Beach.

He reported to have found the body of a man in shallow surf on the beach.

While calling emergency services he then reported that two women walkers on the beach had happened upon the body of a female approximately 200 metres further along the beach which had also washed up on the beach in shallow surf.

Lambinon says paramadics arrived and performed extensive CPR on both casualties but were unable to revive them.

Lambinon says its been established that the two were  British citizens on holiday, a 28-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman. Its believed they had gone to swim shortly after arriving in Plettenberg Bay.

It is suspected that they drowned. Sea conditions were rough with strong rip-currents in the vicinity. Police have opened an inquest docket and British authorities are assisting the families abroad.
