Xenophobic attacks continue in Grahamstown


Grahamstown Police have met with the Department of Education to discuss a growing concern of possible xenophobic attacks at schools attended by  foreign national children 

Police Captain Mali Govender says police received reports of threats being made to school children.

Certain schools in Grahamstown have meanwhile closed as a result of looting and disruptions.

Govender says two cases of community members looting foreign national businesses were reported on Thursday night and it is still Continuing in some areas.

Police are monitoring these areas.

" This morning we are getting sporadic  reports of looting as well as some disruptions in the townships and certain areas.Certain schools have taken a decision to close their schools as a result of these incidents in order to prevent any incidents from taking place" she said.

Meanwhile the 90 suspects that were arrested for public violence on Wednesday are currently appearing in the Grahamstown magistrate court.

Police are outside the courts to ensure no disruptions take place.

The ANC chief whip at Makana Municipality, Julia Wells told Algoa Fm news earlier  that the incidents were sparked by allegations of muti-related murders by foreign nationals.

Wells says the police have not found concrete evidence to support the allegations.
