Breakthrough as suspect nabbed for murder of Bay physio

Police have arrested a 29-year-old suspect in connection with the murder of Bay physiotherapist Marolien Schmidt.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the man was arrested in Central in the early hours of Thursday morning.

She says the motive for the murder is suspected to be robbery.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court on Monday the 14th.

Forty-year-old Schmidt was stabbed multiple times and died on her way to the hospital.

Janse van Rensburg says neighbours could hear Schmidt screaming from her home in Sherlock Street and found her still breathing in her home.

She died on her way to the hospital.

According to Ward 5 Councillor Terri Stander, her camera footage provided valuable information to assist in identifying the suspect.

She praised the police for their tremendous effort in capturing the suspect at 1 am.

Her praises were echoed by Nelson Mandela District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata who commended the detective officers for the speedy arrest. ‘
