The Post Office in Ring Road, Port Elizabeth was hit by four armed robbers in a brazen lunchtime robbery on Wednesday.
An eye witness told Algoa FM News that one man walked in and 'calmly' ordered approximately 16 customers to lie on the floor.
He politely allowed an elderly woman to sit on a chair after she complained about sore knees.
A Booysen's Park resident, who'd prefer not to be named, says the initial robber was then joined by three accomplices who were all packing 9 mm pistols.
The one suspect then jumped over the counter at the 5th teller and demanded money from the safe.
He says all the customers who were lying on the ground were ordered to put their phones and wallets on the floor, although none of these items were taken.
The witness said the men fled in a "grey compressor Mercedez Benz".
Nobody was injured.
Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said police were on the scene gathering information.
Post Office Regional General Manager Nombulelo Ngubane confirmed that an undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
