The 34-year-old man accused of axing his girlfriend to death at the weekend has been identified as Mlondi Ntlangulela.
The accused, who made his first court appearance in Mossel Bay on Wednesday, is believed to have brutally attacked 25-year-old, Naledi Phangindawo, with a knife and an axe in front of several eyewitnesses at a cultural function in KwaNonqaba on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses told police that he attacked Naledi without any warning and hacked her repeatedly over her entire body, including her face.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, says he fled the scene when the ambulance arrived.
Naledi was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Ntlangulela later handed himself over to the Lwandile police in Cape Town on Sunday.
The case was rolled over to Thursday for Ntlangulela to get an attorney.
He remains in custody.
