The box of Khat, wrapped in newspaper, found behind drivers seat of taxi

SAPS

Police in the Garden Route discovered 155 bundles of Khat worth an estimated street value of R15 000 following a search of a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi that was en-route to George.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Christ Spies said members found a box behind the driver seat during the search.

He said the drugs were wrapped in newspapers inside the box.

No arrests were made in connection with the discovery.

Khat is a plant native to the horn of African and was classified as a drug by the World Health Organisation in 1980.

The use of Khat is legal in several countries, but in South Africa, it is a protected tree and its use is illegal.
