A 73-year-old man widely reported to be the CEO of Bosasa, Gavin Watson, died in a car accident in Johannesburg on Monday morning.
Police Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale says the accident happened near the OR Tambo International Airport.
"It is reported that the man was driving into the airport precinct when he allegedly lost control of his vehicle and collided with a concrete pillar holding up a highway bridge. The victim was certified dead on the scene by paramedics and a case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation."
Police have not identified the victim yet, although several news outlets have confirmed that it was former PE businessman Gavin Watson.
The former Port Elizabeth businessman was at the centre of testimony at the State Capture Commission.
The Commission heard how Watson was a charismatic leader who had a lot of influence over his employees.
Bosasa, which has since changed its name to African Global Operations, has been accused of bribing officials to obtain contracts with the Department of Correctional Services among a host of other allegations.
The former COO Angelo Agrizzi told the commission how Bosasa spent between R4 -R6 million per month, in cash, for bribes.
