The Border-Kei Chamber of Business has launched the South African Green Schools Initiative through its Energy Forum.
The Chamber's Les Holbrook says Merrifield Preparatory School and College in Beacon Bay is serving as the pilot site for the project, which was launched last week.
He says once the initiative is fine-tuned, the Chamber's Energy Forum will roll it out to other schools, especially schools in rural areas with no or limited access to energy and sanitation.
"We thought that bringing the schools into it would also be a wonderful way of developing some kind of education or curriculum around that . We also needed to find industry that would support this in terms of sponsoring the various technical requirements for example lighting, batteries, turbines and wind energy. We think that we can show the department of education a reason for them to roll this out to other schools in the province" Holbrook said.
