Booze warning and doggie walking guidelines for Garden Route beaches

George Municipality’s Law Enforcement has sent a stern warning to beachgoers after they tried to bring hundreds of litres of alcohol worth thousands of Rands onto various beaches in one day.

According to the City’s Law Enforcement Chief, Richard von Willingh, members of the public packed in 332.3 litres of various kinds of liquor with an approximate value of R10 129, which they tried to bring onto various beaches on Sunday.

He said the “alcohol would have been confiscated” had they not left the beach area.

Van Wllingh said George Municipality Law Enforcement would have a zero-tolerance in enforcing the alcohol ban on local beaches.

He said the Municipality appointed 30 monitors to assist with beach patrols and bag searches.

“Alcohol is strictly prohibited on all beach areas under the control of the George Municipality which include Herold’s Bay, Gwaiing River Mouth, Victoria Bay, Wilderness, and Leentjiesklip areas,” Van Willingh said.

Meanwhile, SA National Parks has issued colour-coded guidelines to dog lovers who want to walk their pooches on sections of Wilderness Beach which fall under its jurisdiction.

Green Zones are where “dogs are welcome”, while in orange zones they must be on a leash at all times.  The Red Zone demarcates restricted areas, which include Blue Flag beaches and breeding areas for endangered birds.

SANParks also issued a 12-point code of conduct for people walking dogs on the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park.
