The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) on Friday said it had arrested a bookkeeper suspected of cooking the books and stealing more than half a million rand from an old age home in the Western Cape.
"On Wednesday 29th June 2016 the Hawks arrested a 38 year old female, a former bookkeeper at an old age home in Mossel Bay, for theft and fraud amounting to just under a million rand," said Captain Lloyd Ramovha from the Hawks.
"It is alleged that during 2011 an independent audit of the home’s accounts uncovered discrepancies, stretching over a three year period, where about R688 471.90 couldn’t be accounted for."
Ramovha said it was immediately apparent that the accused manipulated the records and registers, in an attempt to mask her shenanigans.
The suspect is expected to appear in Mossel Bay Regional Court on 15 August 2016. She is facing charges of theft and fraud.
