Boks to honour Chester in their opening match in Japan

The Springboks will carry the image of 1995 Rugby World Cup winner Chester Williams on their jerseys in Saturday's blockbuster Pool B opener against New Zealand in Yokohama - kick-off 11h45 SA time.

Williams was a shining star of the Springboks’ 1995 World Cup-winning campaign but passed away suddenly from a heart attack in Cape Town two weeks ago. He was just 49.

His image has been embedded into the playing number on the team’s jerseys, along with those of the current squad and South African rugby fans who sent in selfies to have their images carried into the match on the backs of the players.

Friday sees the opening ceremony at 11h30 followed by the first match between the hosts Japan and Russia - kick-off at the Tokyo International Stadium is at a quarter to one SA Time.
