Police have launched a manhunt for four 'bogus' traffic cops, in uniform, who hijacked a courier truck on the N2 outside Thornhill on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli says the 35-year-old driver and his assistant were travelling from George in the direction of Port Elizabeth when they noticed two vehicles, branded with official signage, at the side of the road.
The 'officers' from the Ford Icon and Volkswagen Polo signalled him to pull over and approached him as a normal traffic officer would do.
Majola says when the one 'officer' asked for his licence another pulled out a firearm.
The victims were shoved into the Ikon and told to keep their heads down.
He says they were driven to a bushy area in Motherwell where they were tied with cable ties.
The suspects stayed with them for 20 minutes before fleeing the scene.
The driver and his assistant managed to walk to the nearest road where they flagged down a passing motorist who gave them a lift to the nearest police station.
The hijacked vehicle was found abandoned on the Rocklands Road with the back door still open.
Nkohli says only a few boxes were still inside and they are not yet sure what was stolen.
For now, a case of hijacking is under investigation with more charges that could later be added.
