Grahamstown police have opened an inquest docket after the body of a man was found at the military base in the city.
Police captain Mali Govender says the man, who had been missing since Tuesday, was found with a gunshot wound.
She says its believed the deceased and his friend were in a restricted area during a pre-deployment shooting exercise when the incident occurred.
"The friend allegedly fled and reported the incident after family members inquired after him. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation. An appeal is made to the community to refrain from picking up scrap metal from the military base as this could be a danger to themselves and others" Govender said.
