Police search and rescue teams have recovered the body of a young Eastern Cape scholar who was washed away while trying to cross a river at Mount Fletcher.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said on Saturday that the body of 8-year-old Boitumelo Lebenya, was discovered late on Friday afternoon following a community search.
He said the search for the last missing schoolboy, 6-year-old Masixole Molekoa, continued on Saturday.
The discovery of the child’s body brings to five the number of children confirmed dead after a group of 17 learners trying to cross the river after school on Wednesday were swept away.
Community members were able to pull 11 children from the water.
The ANC in the Eastern Cape said it had directed all spheres of government to give the families of the learners all the necessary support.
