The body of a baby was found on Hartenbos beach on Tuesday morning.
Police say the identity and age of the child is not yet known.
Algoa FM news correspondent Louise Karsten was on the scene and says the baby was wrapped in two plastic bags and a piece of cloth which was found inside a colourful cooler bag.
A beachgoer found the body on the beach near Hartenbos River Mouth at around 10 am.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Kappie Kapp says anyone with information about a woman who recently gave birth and is now all of a sudden childless should contact the Mossel Bay police station.
Forensic investigators were on the scene and DNA tests will be conducted to help identify the body.
Police suspect that the baby is about 3 months old but the exact age could not yet be confirmed.
