Three killed in separate fires in Gqeberha

The aftermath of a fire at a complex in St Georges.

Gqeberha police have opened inquest dockets following two fatal fires in the city.

Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says in the first fire on Monday night a woman and her 10-month-old baby girl died when their shack in Elijah Street in Walmer Township burnt down.

She says 35-year-old Bukelwa Klaas and her baby Likhaya were asleep when the fire started.

Naidu says firefighters were called out to a second fire at a block of flats in Park Drive at 8 am on Tuesday, next to the St Georges Hospital.

She says a fire broke out on the second floor where a 65-year-old resident died.

The cause of both fires are still unknown and will be investigated by authorities.

Her name has not yet been released.
