Bodies of three EC family members found in river

Eastern Cape police have recovered the bodies of a 71-year-old woman and her two granddaughters, who were kidnapped from their home in the Lower Tsojana Administrative Area at Tsomo last Sunday evening.

Spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni said a shepherd saw the bodies of the woman and girls, aged 16 and 17, floating in the Mhlahlane river on Saturday, and notified the police.

Police divers managed to retrieve the bodies, which were found tied with chains.

Mdleleni earlier said that the girls' 19-year-old sister, who did not live with them, had told police she believed they were being raped over time by their uncle and one of them fell pregnant.

Earlier on the day the three went missing, police had visited the family as part of their investigation after the rape allegations were reported.

Mdleleni said it is alleged that after the police left, the uncle arrived and began questioning the family on what the police were looking for.

That was the last time both the family and the uncle were seen.

Three cases of murder and kidnapping were opened and no arrests have been yet

Police are appealing to anyone who can assist with the information that can lead to the arrest of the perpetrators  to contact the toll-free number 0860010111
