Bob Hewitt wants discharge in rape trial

Former tennis star Bob Hewitt's lawyer has indicated he will apply for his client's discharge in the rape and indecent assault case against him.

Terry Price on Wednesday asked Judge Bert Bam for a postponement so he could prepare an application in terms of section 174 of the Criminal Procedures Act.

Bam adjourned proceedings in the Johannesburg High Court, sitting in Palm Ridge,  until 9.30 am on Thursday.

Price said he needed to research constitutional law around his client's right to a fair trial.

75 year-old Hewitt faces two charges of rape and one of indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prosecutor Carina Coetzee closed the State's case after three days of trial in which three women testified that Hewitt had sexually abused them in the 1980's and early 1990's.

At the time, Hewitt was their tennis coach and they were all young teenagers.
