Bob Hewitt gets new date for parole hearing

Disgraced tennis player and convicted rapist Bob Hewitt

A new parole hearing for convicted rapist Bob Hewitt has been set down for the 24th of March 2020.

The 80-year-old disgraced tennis player was sentenced to an effective 6 years in prison for raping two of his underage students in the 80's.

Hewitt was initially granted parole but it was revoked after it came to light that the correct procedures were not followed in the matter as victims need to be consulted in a parole hearing.

A spokesperson for the organisation Woman and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) Miranda Jordan says the parole process will result in the victims having to travel from Gauteng to Port Elizabeth to petition the release of a man who sexually assaulted and raped them.

She says the parole process is completely perpetrator-centric and speaks volume of how broken the system is.

Jordan says one of the most important considerations before rehabilitation should be remorse, and according to WMACA Hewitt has shown no acknowledgement of his crime.

The new parole date is set down for the 24th of March.

Hewitt has been in prison since September 2016 and has served just over half of his sentence.

Hewitt was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of fame in 1992 but was suspended in 2012 and subsequently expelled in 2016.
