Former president Nelson Mandela's grandson Mandla has suffered a setback during his assault trial in the Mthatha Regional Court.
The National Prosecuting Authority said Mandla's application to have the charges against him dismissed, was turned down on Thursday by the magistrate.
He has been charged with assault and pointing a fire-arm at teacher, Mlamle Ngudle, late last year.
NPA spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali says "The defence of Mandla Mandela did make an application in terms of section 174 of the criminal procedure act, that the case against him be dismissed because the state has not led enough evidence for him to take the stand, but the magistrate dismissed that. As a result he has taken the stand in his own defence."
