It’s been a black weekend on the country's roads, with at least 17 people killed in accidents as the festive season gains momentum.
At least seven people were killed in three separate accidents in the Eastern Cape this weekend.
In the Free State, four people were killed and 18 others were injured in a collision between a truck and a minibus taxi on the N1 close to the Brandfort off-ramp, about 20 km from Bloemfontein last night.
ER24 says two people in the taxi were ejected from the vehicle, and died at the scene.
One person sustained critical injuries.
The cause of the accident is still unknown, and police are investigating.
And near Modimolle in Limpopo, police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, after six people were killed and two injured in a head-on collision on the N1 yesterday.
Police spokesperson, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe says it is alleged that a bus lost control due to a mechanical fault, causing it to zig-zag over the road.
He says two cars, travelling in opposite directions, tried to avoid colliding with it, but instead, collided head-on with each other, killing six people instantly.
The two seriously injured people were stablised at the scene and rushed to hospital.
