The National Empowerment Fund is set to hand over a multi-million rand investment to a 100% black-owned logistics company in the Sarah Baartman District Municipality on Wednesday.
The fund will invest more than 40 million rand in the Milkway Transport company, while the municipality will invest 350 000 rand, which is set to boost the company's capacity.
The company was founded in 2016 by Eastern Cape locals Clayton and Leonie Damons who have a passion for farming and their communities.
Damons, originally from Hankey, began his career as a farm worker, while Leonie, born and raised in Thornhill, both share a deep connection to the local community
In a statement, the NEF said the investment will see the Milkway Transport company expand its fleet from 1 truck to 19, create jobs, and service major clients such as Woodlands Dairy and Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa.
"The launch will celebrate the partnership between the NEF, the local municipalities, and Milkway Transport as a beacon of opportunity, economic empowerment, and transformation in the region. This event also highlights the Government’s commitment to supporting the growth of black-owned enterprises, women’s entrepreneurship, and rural development," the statement reads.
