Bhisho to dispose of costly immovable assets

The Eastern Cape government say it will need R4b to maintain its immovable properties in the 2012/2013 financial year.

Public Works MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, said yesterday that it would therefore be strategic for the Bhisho government to transfer properties that are key to unlocking socio-economic development amongst communities and individuals who don't own property.

Marawu said the transfers will also redress skewed ownership of land in the province, promoting ownership in previously disadvantaged communities.

"This process has saved the provincial government on its limited maintenance budget as well as on property rates and taxes. However, the emphasis is not on savings but developmental value," said Marawu.

She said her department is committed to dispose properties to local municipalities and inviduals in order to contribute to the socio-economic development within municipalities and upgrade of tenure for previously disadvantaged individuals.
