Bhisho says all temp teachers brought back in January have been paid

The Eastern Cape Education Department says temporary teachers who were brought back into the system in January have been paid.

Department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, said today that this was part of the reinstatement of 1,900 teachers to posts in the province.

However, Pulumani has acknowledged that there are instances in various districts where temporary teachers have still not been paid.

" I know that there has been instances in some district offices where people were unilaterally brought back into schools, either by the principles or the districts who did not have the authority to do so there are issues still outstanding. I know that the department have compiled a list of the earnings and it has to be negotiated still with treasury to see if it is possible to work out a payment for them" Pulumani said.

Meanwhile Algoa FM News has been inundated with calls from temp teachers who say they have not been paid since January.

Stories abound of teachers losing their cars and defaulting on house payments while several former model C schools in the Metro are also reeling under the weight.

Andrew Sauls, the chairperson of the Bethelsdorp School Governing Body Unit has appealed to all temp teachers to contact him so that they can collate all the information from across Nelson Mandela Bay.

The SGB unit, , which represents 35 school governing bodies in Port Elizabeth's northern areas, is being supported by religious leaders in the campaign to get all temp teachers paid.
