Bhisho ready for 2015 school year

Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula, says all indicators point to a commendable state of readiness for the 2015 school year.

He said in a statement that 99.6% of stationery is already in schools with the remaining schools receiving their supplies by Friday.

MEC Makupula says 92% of the top up orders for text books have been delivered to schools with the remainder being distributed to schools.

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana, has also given assurance that the province's scholar transport programme will be rolled-out this week.

She says more than 1 330 public transport operators are expected to sign Service level Agreements with her Department today so that learners can be transported as of Thursday until the end of the first school term in April.

The Department was recently ordered by a court to re-advertise its scholar transport programme following a legal challenge by taxi association Uncedo.

Meanwhile, members of Bhisho's Education Portfolio Committee will fan out across the province today to monitor the start of the new school year.

Committee chairperson, Kholiswa Fihlani, says they want to assess first hand the state of readiness of schools and report on old and new challenges facing them.

She says their monitoring programme will run until the end of the month.
