The Eastern Cape Health Department has set the process in motion to institute disciplinary proceedings against three senior state doctors in the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex.
The Bhisho Health Department appears to have singIed-out the heads of three departments, charging in letters to them that they must show why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.
The doctors, supported by the all the heads of department, spoke out this week about the shortage of doctors and staff, accusing the Bhisho Health Ministry of being unable to address the health crisis which is affecting the delivery of health services.
In the letter, which Algoa FM has seen, the Health Department has given the doctors 48 hours to show why they should not be charged with misconduct for speaking to the media without authorisation.
The stance taken by the Health Department has come under fire from some sector unions and opposition parties who says the Bhisho Health Ministry is not dealing with the substantive issues raised by the doctors.
The letters to the doctors were dated June 26, a day after they held an unprecedented media briefing to tell the public about the poor state of affairs in the PE Hospital Complex.
