The Eastern Cape Department is in the process of employing 500 temporary teachers to ease the crisis caused by the failure to fill vacant posts.
Department spokesperson, Loyiso Pulumani, says they are busy issuing letter of appointment to hundreds of teachers in 10 districts. "This is an interim measure meant to ensure that all our schools have a teacher in front of all our learners, whilst the process of finalising the process post provisioning continues," Pulumani said in a statement today.
He says head office has verified and confirmed the qualifications and registration of the teachers.
Pulumani said this was an interim measure to ensure that all schools have teachers for all learners, while the process of finalising post provisioning continues.
"The finalisation of that leg in the process will enable the Department to have an reliable profile of teacher needs in the province, and thus be in a position to issue a valid recruitment bulletin that will result in permanent employment into vacancies. That will assist to make sure that the cohort of educators in the system are permanent, and ensure that services of all teachers are optimally utilised. This is the crucial step needed to be taken to finally bring lasting stability to education in the Eastern Cape," Pulumani said.
