The Eastern Cape Departments of Health and Education has once more received the lions share of the provincial budget.
Provincial Planning and Finance MEC, Pumulo Masualle, tabled a budget of 56.2 billion rand in the Bhisho legislature this morning for the 2012/2013 financial year.
Masualle said the departments of Health and Education deserve higher priority. The department of Health was allocated R15.1b which is to be spent among other things in getting ready for the National health insurance programme. The department of education was allocated R26.2b for school nutrition programmes and the re-instatement of teachers.
Meanwhile, Masualle said today's budget is one for growth and transformation.
He told the House that, as is always the case, the budget is about how priorities are resourced.
Masualle also welcomed recent announcements by president Jacob Zuma and provincial premier Noxolo Kiviet that the province will benefit substantially from massive investment in infrastructre spending.
