Bhisho Education head placed on precautionary suspension

The Eastern Cape Education Department has confirmed that the Head of the Department, Mthunywa Ngonzo, has been placed on precautionary suspension.

Details of Ngonzo's suspension remain sketchy, but the Head of Communications in the Department of Education, Phila Ngqumba, says he will be the subject of an investigation.

"The MEC confirmed this morning that the head of the department has been suspended pending an investigation. He is still the head of the department of Education but he has been given a precautionary suspension. There are matters that need to be investigated. It is still to early to talk about the finer issues as it is part of a legal process" he said.

Dispatch Online reports that at the centre of the fall out between Ngonzo and MEC Mandla Makupula, is a 100-million contract awarded to a Johannesburg company, Fever Tree Consulting, to overhaul the department’s administration.
