Bhisho considers appealing Makana court ruling

The Eastern Cape government said it is considering appealing a High Court ruling ordering it to dissolve the Makana Council.

The ground-breaking judgment was handed down on Tuesday in favour of the Unemployed People’s Movement who took the matter to court amid claims of maladministration and the collapse of service delivery in Makhanda.

The Court ordered the provincial government to appoint an administrator until a new Council is elected.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Bhisho government said that the judgment “has far-reaching implications and the Eastern Cape provincial government is considering appealing”.

According to the statement, the ruling will be “suspended until such time that a final decision is taken in this regard”.

“The provincial government remains committed to ensuring that Makana Municipality functions effectively and with efficiency in providing municipal services to the people of Makanda as per their constitutional mandate,” the statement said.
