Bhisho concerned about ongoing EC taxi violence

The Eastern Cape Transport Department said it was concerned by the brutal killings affecting the province's taxi industry for the past three years.

The Department was commenting on Friday following this week's murder of Border Alliance Taxi Association Secretary, 60-year-old Lindela Mba, who was shot several times by unknown gunmen in East London on Wednesday evening.

Police said Mba was shot in the upper body while sitting in his car in the driveway of his Unit 9 home in Mdantsane. He died on the way to the hospital.

His murder is reportedly the 10th killing since 2016 that is believed to be related to the ongoing rivalry between some taxi associations.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Bhinqose, said the taxi killings were disturbing.

"We believe that the police would be able to get to the bottom of this because it is in the interest of the Department to see a well-functioning taxi industry with no violence and killings," he said.
