Bhisho commemorates Ngquza Hills massacre

The Eastern Cape government on Friday commemorated the 1960 Ingquza Hill massacre in Flagstaff.

Premier Phumulo Masualle and Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina with other partners joined the community to commemorate the Day.

In 1960, eleven people were killed, when a group AmaMpondo gathered on the hill to protest against unjust apartheid laws.

Subsequently 23 others were sentenced to death, executed and buried at Mamelodi Cemetery.

Post 1994, the remains of the 23 were exhumed and reburied in Mbizana and Ngquza Hill.

Provincial government spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota says apart from the monuments, they have noted that the community of Ngquza is still without some basic needs like running water.

"What is critical in this programme is apart from the heritage centre that has been established including the work that is underway for the musuem,we also need to meet the urgent and pressing needs of the Ngquza community. Most of them still do not have access to drinking water and sanitation is still a problem." says Kota.
