The Eastern Cape Government has called on members of the public who may have information on corruption linked to the procurement of Personal Protective Equipment to come forward.
Finance MEC, Mlungisi Mvoko, said that this information can be sent to the Premier’s Anti-Corruption Hotline on 080 121 2570.
The appeal was made in a statement on Monday where Mvoko also revealed that the Eastern Cape had spent in the region of R1.2bn on the procurement of PPE’s since the national state of disaster was declared in March.
The MEC said that the Eastern Cape Government had decided to heed the call by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and publish details relating to Covid19 spending in the province.
“This is done to maintain accountability, transparency, and ethical behavior in the province,” said Mvoko.
The Finance MEC added that the publication of PPE procurement details comes amid an investigation by Provincial Treasury into all Covid19 procurement.
He said while it’s too early to release any information as yet, Mvoko said that there are “preliminary findings” which are being addressed with “relevant institutions to ascertain governance matters.”
“Our plan is to start providing reports on the completed investigation by the end of August,” Mvoko said.
The Eastern Cape has come under fire for spending over R4m on a non-existent door-to-door campaign and also for spending R10 million in the so-called Scootergate saga.
