The Eastern Cape department of health has appointed 57 health professionals to the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex.
Spokesperson Siyanda Manana has confirmed the appointments, saying 15 are doctors.
"The one doctor is already on duty from Tuesday the others are going on duty in the beginning of January 2013. We have also made some appointments in terms of nurses with forty to start in January" Manana said.
Dozens of doctors in Port Elizabeth state health institutions have publicly voiced their concern over staff shortages and other challenges over the past few months.
