A service delivery protest in Gqeberha turned violent on Monday when community members looted a beer truck of its contents and set the vehicle alight.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge said the damage is estimated at R1.4 million rand for the looted cargo and damage to the truck, which was completely burnt out.
He said the incident happened at around 12.30 on the R-75 near Despatch.
Beetge told Algoa FM News that the driver had approached the scene where members of the community, who were angry about service delivery issues, put tyres in the road.
He said when the truck approached the tyres were not lit and when the driver tried to go over them, the community members stepped in front of the vehicle to prevent it from going further.
The driver fled the scene while the protesters looted the truck and set it alight.
Beetge said members of the Public Order Police were monitoring the situation and no arrests were made.
