Beached dolphin rescued in Jeffreys Bay

The NSRI has commended members of the public for assisting in trying to get a beached dolphin back into the sea at Jeffreys Bay.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said their Station 37 Jeffreys Bay duty crew were activated on Saturday afternoon following reports that a dolphin had washed onto rocks at Lower Point.

He said two young fishermen and members of the public had tried to get the dolphin, which had cuts on its fin, back into the sea without success.

Lambinon said the Marine Animal Stranding Network was alerted and a Vet sent to the scene.

He said the vet deemed the dolphin to be in good health despite the minor cuts.

"Assisted by members of the public the NSRI loaded the dolphin onto a bakkie which was transported to Dolphin Beach where it was loaded onto the NSRI sea rescue craft Project Group Rescuer and released 1.5 kilometres out to sea,” he said.

Lambinon said the dolphin swam around the sea rescue craft a few times “before raising its head out of the water" and disappearing into the sea.

He said they are cautiously optimistic that the dolphin has survived.
